I think it helps to be nimble on this front. But I do think it's important to keep it front of mind. We have so many opportunities to join X initiative or X paper etc. But only so much time. Having a mission statement or a guiding purpose helps to keep on track and be sensible with our time. Starting my newsletter helped me recently to think about my wider purpose and how it would fit in with that, including my research programme. And redoing my website recently also helped force me to refine our lab's mission.
